Preparing for Hustings and Speeches
High-pressure events like town hall meetings, hustings, televised debates, and AGMs all share one thing. The stakes are high.
Campaign-changing. Potentially life-changing. And with all eyes and ears on you, it's your job to command attention, charm your audience and tell your story - all while thinking on your feet.
Whether it's a big speech or a hustings event, I can help you feel polished, prepared and ready for anything.
Public Speaking and Hustings Preparation
Let's face it - speeches, debates, and hustings can be intimidating! Stepping up to that podium with the spotlight shining on you is daunting, even for experienced politicians and executives. Your mind races, thinking about everything that could go wrong in front of all those expectant eyes and ears.
After all, the stakes couldn't be higher - one slip-up on stage can derail an entire campaign or sink a political career before it's started. The pressure to tell your story flawlessly and with finesse while fielding tough questions is immense.
But with the proper preparation and coaching, these nerve-wracking speeches or hustings don't have to be so scary.
I've helped countless clients conquer those fears and feel ready to face even the most brutal scrutiny when the lights are shining down. Whether it's making a speech to the United Nations or fielding Paxman-like questions, live on TV.
Commanding the spotlight at your next event
If it matters, you need to prepare. Here are just a few ways my public speaking, storytelling, debate and husting preparation can help you deliver an outstanding performance to inspire your next audience:
An Address to the United Nations - the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka
In 2003, I worked extensively with the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka to craft and refine his pivotal address to the United Nations General Assembly. Over ten days in New York, I had unique access to observe the PM's meetings and speaking style, allowing me to capture and deploy his authentic voice and perspective in the speech.
Given the high-stakes nature of this UN address, the PM wisely invested substantial time rehearsing the final draft with me. We worked on his content, delivery and stage presence. This preparation paid off. After his statesmanlike UN peace speech, the PM received an uproarious welcome on returning home, with fans lining the streets to welcome him home.
For obvious reasons, this is one of my proudest achievements. Even as Prime Minister, Ranil recognised the importance of preparation and the need for work on both substance and style when it comes to communication on a global stage.
The Prime Minister took over 8 hours to complete the 30 km drive from Bandaranaike International Airport to the capital Colombo due to the crowds who had come out to greet him.
