Talk Like TED
To earn the right to speak on the red dot, the red circular carpet of TED or TEDMED, you need an "idea worth spreading" and be good at telling the stories that illustrate and transmit that idea.
What you say is important, but so is how you say it.
TED talks are lessons in persuasion, in triggering imagination and being catalysts for action.
Exactly the same is required of leaders who want their audience to become believers - whatever the audience. By definition, leaders need followers.
Talk Like TED
Some people contact me and say that they want to be a great speaker. But they don't know what they want to speak about.
It's like wanting a car but not knowing where you want to drive to. Speaking is a tool. TED Talks are for "ideas worth spreading".
Wanting to become a great speaker for the adulation and the applause is a vanity project. MLK had a purpose. Ghandi was incredibly shy and introverted and hated speaking in public, but he had a purpose. Mandela had a purpose.
Do you have an idea worth spreading?
Do you want to raise awareness of an issue, change people's minds, change people's behaviour?
Then you have to get on a stage and open your mouth. And speak.
But it's tough on stage. Audiences have a distraction device in their hand. An attention-stealing device.
You have to get their attention and then retain their attention.
You have to find the right combination of words and deliver them in the right way.
Peter is one of the best practitioners of “tough love” I’ve ever seen. He’s direct and uncompromising. He “gives it to you with the bark off,” as they say – but you’ll love every minute of working with him. Marcus Webb. Chief Storytelling Officer, TEDMED
Your ability to persuade through storytelling and using words can change the world, or at least your part of the world.
Clear Purpose = Great Storytelling
In February 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted a defiant video on Twitter, shot outside in front of “Chimeras House” across from the Presidential Office, not hiding in an anonymous bunker - an eloquent story in itself.
He told the world: "I am here, we are not surrendering. We are fighting. Glory to Ukraine."
Turning down an evacuation offer, he declared his purpose: "I need ammunition, not a ride."
What is your purpose?

Do YOU Have a Coach?
Should You Have a coach?
If you have an "idea worth spreading" surely you owe it to yourself and your audience to choose and deliver your words in a way that has the maximum impact.
How can you support a sports team and not have a coach in your job as a leader?
