This post was from 2021, but it should still be relevant today!

New year, new you?

...what about a new job?

If you're still employed, but feel like a fresh start - here's the harsh reality for you, it's not that easy.

And, unless your Wonder Woman and Superman wrapped up in one, with Iron Man's charisma and the efficiency of Batman's butler Alfred - you won't just walk into a new job.

If you've been looking for a while, I don't need to tell you how tough it is out there. Whether you're currently unemployed, or desperately need that new start, I know how hard it can be, and how easy it is to get into a slump.

So, with 2021 here and a new month ahead - I have a few quick tips from my new interview book, Filtered Out, to help you kick-start your job search, brighten your chances and prevent yourself from being filtered out.

5 Ways to kick-start your job search:

  1. 1
Step away from the computer. Put your phone down and breathe for a while. We all perform better when we switch off, go outside, look at some green things and take a break.
  2. 2
Put things into perspective. Everything is relative and, while your world is rocked to its core right now, you're probably still miles ahead of some - so take time to be grateful for what you do have and consider being patient if you can.
  3. 3
Understand what you really want from a job. If you can't do this, you'll only find yourself creeping back onto Indeed.com in your lunch break. What sort of job are you really looking for, in what industry - and to what end?
  4. 4
Make the most of your time. Unless you're doing a full 8-hours a day sending off CV's, applying for roles or making calls - you could be doing more. And if you find yourself doing this, how effective is this approach? Are you getting an interview (and then flunking it)? Or are you being filtered out at the first hurdle (the CV sift?) - Filtered Out can cure either of these.
  5. 5
Social media and networking. Tidy your social media, delete the guff and focus. Use it as a networking tool. Leverage Twitter and LinkedIn, create content that shows off what you know and get onto the radar of your prospective employers (follow their company page, check out who's working there - and even connect with them).
