Rainmaking or Getting a Job – Can Social Media bypass scary gatekeepers?
However good, well crafted, different and relevant your message is, it is useless if no-one – WHO CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT – hears it. Networking has always been crucial and various astonishing statistics swarm around of how many jobs/contracts are obtained without real tenders – in other words they are given to people already known.
But social media is now being used by more and more people. Have you ever got a job or a contract through “virtual contacts”? Or been made aware of an opportunity through social media from a personal contact that would previously have only been a Christmas Card Contact?
Mashable has a an article summarising the top 10 social sites for finding a job. The same list probably applies to suppliers looking for work.
P.S. Is there anybody out there complaining about the recession who has a stack of leaflets or brochures hanging around in their office?
